Press Release: ane.energy and ingenia Partner to Develop, Operate, and Market Battery Storage

On August 20, the ink was barely dry on the contracts: ingenia and ane.energy (ANE) have established a joint project company together with Bürgerenergie Kocher-Jagst. ingenia holds a stake of around 70 percent, ANE around 20 percent. By combining their strengths in developing, financing, and marketing energy infrastructure, the partners are laying the groundwork for joint energy transition projects.

The deal marks a significant milestone for ANE: it is the company's first stake in a large-scale battery storage facility. The location in Crailsheim, Baden-Württemberg, is also unfamiliar territory for a company based in northern Germany. Even so, the move was a logical one, says ANE Managing Director Ralf Höper:

Battery storage is a perfect fit for our portfolio – it adds flexibility to our direct marketing business, allowing us to store surplus electricity and feed it into the grid precisely when market conditions are most attractive. Short-term trading on the exchange is also territory we already know inside and out, and over the long term this deepens the strategic diversification of our renewable energy portfolio.

The move makes just as much sense for ingenia. The company has spent many years developing complex photovoltaic projects for commercial, industrial, and agricultural customers, and sees battery storage as a key success factor for energy solutions that are both economically viable and built to last. The large-scale storage facility in Crailsheim-Onolzheim, designed to serve both the market and the grid, is ingenia's first storage project whose business case rests largely on trading its flexibility on the energy markets. Through the partnership with ANE, ingenia is pairing its strengths in project development, delivery, and plant operation with the marketing expertise of an experienced energy trader.

Commissioning and Responsibilities

The joint battery storage facility – with an output of 12 MW and a storage capacity of 24 MWh – will be built in Onolzheim, a district of Crailsheim. All key contracts are already in place, most notably the grid connection agreement. Construction is set to begin in late summer, and commissioning is on track for the end of the year. ingenia is responsible for project development and will operate the facility, while ANE will handle optimization and marketing.
